The University of Sheffield

There’s always something organised by the Student Union for students to do, so no problem there. The lecture halls and most facilities look nice and modern. The course structure does need some work but they are always asking for feedback on how to do this.

Sheffield overall is a good university, I study biomedical science a course that I wouldn’t recommend as the department isn’t very helpful and lecturers don’t try to make lectures interesting. However, the university as a whole has good facilities, the student union has been voted number 1 in the country for years, it has shops, restaurants, activities halls, bars and even a cinema so there’s lots to offer. The careers service the university offers is good you can book appointments on the day to speak to an adviser if you’re early enough and you can use the service up to 3 years after graduating which is really helpful. Overall my uni experience hasn’t been the best but that’s due to my course not the university itself.

The university is good but it really does depend on your course and who you get put in a flat with in first year. My overall experience of first year was bad because of that but with a lot of effort I've managed to make good of it.

Everything is expensive, everyone is awkward and lecturers aren't the most helpful/reliable people. Sports facilities are the worst. You fight with the whole of Uni for one indoor court.

The university is well established, which comes with reat facilities and a reputable degree, however can lend itself to old, cold buildings and a very self centric way of teahing. For example, at other universities you may learn a wider variety of topics whereas Sheffield university focuses on the topics which their research departments specialise in, leading you to a career at their university (and select few others with similar specialties). It can narrow your field of vision. But facilities are great. People are nice. City is wonderful and friendly and busy.

The SU is quite nice and big and te libraries have a good selection of resources. However there’s nowhere near enough seats/seating area/ working areas through the campus to spend time during the day. The food and drink available on campus are really expensive too. My course was alright overall - getting better towards the end

University has nice buildings but could do with more study space in the libraries and the university sports facilities can be made cheaper.

Course was awful - BA geography. Harsh marking and no support at all from the department The su was really good with lots of activities planned and good nights out - including roar, TC and poptarts.

More of a research university and therefore most of the lecturers are more invested in their own work instead of the student. Although it is nice to have access to so many experts in one field, I would have benefited more from a hands on education with lecturers and tutors invested in me and my peers.

I think the campus is great; the main buildings where lectures are held - like the arts tower, hicks and the richard roberts building - are all near to each other and all near to the students union. The main issue is that Sheffield is extremely hilly, so the management school is up a massive hill and when you want to go to goodwin to do sport, you have to walk up a massive hill (northumberland road) which makes it tiring before you even start exercise/lectures. Also, ranmoor/endcliffe are not even slightly close to the university buildings so you’ll have to walk like 25 minutes everyday or stay at Allen Court which has its own issues as the party life sucks and there is constant building work. Lastly, we’re better than Hallam even though we don’t own our own sports facilities.

Campus is very spread out, can take 10-15mins to get to the management building. Main student accomdation is 20-25mins from the campus. No microwaves offered at uni. Lots of seats in the library. Limited variety of food at uni.

Great university, located in a medium size town, Sheffield. Student union is one of the best in the country therefore helps student alot. Facilities is good such as the diamond where its fully equipped and new. Career services is great as they provide free cv checking services and career activities throughout the year. Material science and engineering is good, although some of the lectures are ok lectures but overall experience is fantastic. We even won the 2 highest rank material science department in the UK 2016/2017. Lastly life here is ok for me as an international student. if you are used to asia's big city life with lost of things to do, then think twice. Its more to nightlife here, pubs and just friends hanging around in their place or a club. This is how people spend their time here basicly.
