Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam is a good university. The services for careers advice are decent, the lectures are useful (on the whole) and the campus is nice too. However, money could be spent on more useable facilities and experiences such as excursions etc. Mental health services are limited, counselling is very difficult to get.

Nice campus. Very poor sports facilities that aren't near to the city centre and require bus or car to get to them.

I've been at Hallam for four years and have found there are quite a few issues that need to be reviewed. Firstly the student union does not feel like a student union at all. There isn't any buzz about it and it's a boring place to be which is a shame because the people who work there are very lovely. Secondly, the change to semesterisation in the final year is a massive disadvantage for us because we have been used as guinea pigs to see if it works. It's very difficult to be able to keep on top of things and so easy to miss huge chunks of the module. It feels as if we are being taught to pass an exam not taught to actually learn. Thirdly, I think the assessment methods for the modules is unfair for example one of the modules is 100% based on one singular exam which isn't fair at all. There doesn't feel like there is any actually teaching it is just reading off a PowerPoint or word document. I wouldn't advise anyone on going to Hallam it's a massive waste of money and time.

Overall very disorganized especially in relation to conouting departments. Constantly changing timetables with very little student support or input. Assignments and placement are not well supported.

The campus and faculty overall are good but the student union is so dull compared to other student unions

University itself was lovely, very good location with regards to the city centre and the buildings were always well cleaned- although very difficult to navigate. The course itself (graphic design) was awful. Poorly managed, poorly organised, poorly executed and would not recommend to anyone. A waste of 3 years.

In my experience on an early years course lecturers read off of powerpoint slides with no elaboration and make you feel stupid if you dare to ask them a question. I seem to learn nothing about the topics I’m interested in as lecturers are only interested in you articulating the pass criteria which has lost my interest in the course entirely. If you have a passion for something I definitely wouldn’t recommend studying it here

The university campus is great, it is in the centre of Sheffield close to the train station and main bus station. Inside the facilities are nice the buildings are looked after and equipped with nice seating areas, computer rooms and several cafes. I have had an alright time at Hallam so far, my course (Aerospace engineering) has been a challenge, there are lots of people available for support for everyone no matter the problem. The lecture theatres are good. Some are very small some are very big, they have desks and some have voting pads for lecture quizzes.

The new collegiate campus is lovely as is city campus. Library at collegiate is too small. Tutors kept cancelling meetings all year. The HUBs are a joke - don’t know anyone who’s ever been there apart from freshers fair. No where near the level of Uni of Sheffield’s union which I’ve been to more than HUBs.

There are 2 campus with the city one being larger and thus having a better library as well as better catering and more options such as halal food The sports facilities are quite good the only thing lacking is that the uni does not have its own pool in its gyms and swimming elsewhere can be quite expensive My course is an NHS course and thus I spend a lot of time on placement and have found the support staff are really helpful should I have any issues with lectures, deadlines or placement The career services are second to none with regular career fairs, jobs both in and outside of uni and placements are lost on the unihub online and there is a career centre in the student union for further help and supplier. The students union is lacking in terms of size when compared to other unis and only has a bar and no clubs however this is made up for with a students night organised with a local venue The organisation of most courses is something that is a regular complaint of students however support as a student rep or support for career options or for international students is very good as well as support from academic mentors is very well organised

Hallam has been a very up and down university for me. As an individual I have struggled to fit into Hallam and do occasionally feel as if I don’t belong there. As a university however, Sheffield Hallam is a very good one to attend because both campuses (City and Collegiate) are located within a 10 minute walk from everything whether that be the nightclubs or The Moor (shopping centre). Hallam is also good because it’s not to far away from Meadowhall.

Lovely campus and good course did adult nursing. Provided plenty of opportunities career wise and gave us important information

The organisation on my course has been very poor. Feedback is asked for but then we get shouted at about the feedback which was given... The facilities which the uni have to offer are superb

Both campus' have really great facilities, although at first finding ones way around City campus can prove difficult. Facilities provided (in comparison to other unis) are fairly basic, however there are lots of opportunities in the city centre if the facilities arent covered via the university. The course itself is interesting but not challenging, yet its a laugh.

Campus and sports facilities are fab I’m on illustration degree and I think the program is rubbish the tutors are more bothered about there own work than yours, students union has good facilities but it quite separate, sports is amazing really good team network

Good university. Lecturers sometimes not as helpful as you would want them to be. The campus is in a good location. The union is rubbish but the uni of Sheffield union is much better.

Good university there are lots of extra curricular activities to improve yourself. Also they really help international students to adopt the city and university.

Sheffield Hallam is an interesting University I’m not going to lie. It isn’t what I expected it to be like so the reality of it vs the expectation has disappointed me a little bit. I was expecting pure independence and to have the time of my life. People say that “university is the best years of your life” but I’d disagree. They don’t tell you about the loneliness, the breakdowns or the extremity of the debt. Don’t get me wrong, elements of SHU are really good such as the student union nights and the distance between all necessary locations such as city centre, campus and other parts of Sheffield etc. The teaching staff are very good when it comes to the academics but it’s fair to say that when it comes to the wellbeing and the emotional support, it is not the greatest at all.
