Selly Oak Village

The location is one of the best out of all of the accommodation option available for the university of Birmingham with many shops in walking, pubs and takeaways in very close walk distance. It’s also a 5 minute walk into the university which is great. The facilities are acceptable and partly the reason for this review getting 4 stars out of 5, as all year my shower has not been working properly and I was told in the first day that ‘I should be lucky that it’s working at all as some other students showers weren’t working at all’. This is why I’ve not felt comfortable to ask for it to be fixed again. The walls are paper thin and if you have an overly loud, attention-seeking flat mate living in the room next to you (like I have had), then you’ll find that it’s really hard to get anything done. The room in general, however, has a lot of storage space - more than I needed - and is bigger than I had expected which is great! I live in Jarratt Hall and we have a lot of events that the reps put on which is a fun way to socialise with everyone. As well as this, there’s the Jarratt Hall lounge which everyone is always welcome in and is a great place to socialise!

The rooms themselves are very spacious and I have never had a problem with storage. The shower has a curtain not a door which is not ideal but the bathroom is functional and better than the wet rooms other Ensuite halls have. The kitchen is very nice but there is only one sink which can be an issue depending on your flatmates. The kitchen is a lovely social space as it is big enough to have people over and good for parties. However Jarrett hall is in Selly Oak which is 25 minutes from the vale so you will be further away from most other first years. The walk is not that bad but it is a factor to consider. Also 2 minutes away from Aldi which is ideal!

I feel very secure and my room is more spacious than expected. It's in a great location to access both edgbaston and Selly Oak campuses but would prefer somewhere with a reception area

Rooms, en-suite, and kitchen all fantastic. location is amazing in that it is very close to the university (5 min walk), and 2 mins from Aldi/tesco. downside is that is is very separate from the vale, which is considered the main student hub. Because of this it can feel quite isolating at times. However, I managed to make great friends in my accommodation regardless.

The halls were located 5 mins away from the uni main campus. They’d recently been renovated so the rooms were modern and clean. Whilst out of the main social bubble at the Vale, the location to uni was ideal in first year and meant rolling out of bed five mins before lectures started. It also meant that by the 2nd year when students moved into a house for 2nd year, you were acclimatised to selly oak and knew the best places to go. Overall a well located and busy uni.

The location is fantastic as you are right in the heart of Selly Oak, next to pubs and supermarkets! Lovely kitchens and nice en-suits!

Selly Oak village probably made my master's year one of the best years of my life! Everything was good and I made amazing friends. Above all, the location was just great and made our lives so enjoyable: in a quiet street but near to everything (from supermarkets to pubs), and as close to the university as one can be. The flats seemed almost new; everything was in perfect shape and functioning. So nice!
