How to save some pennies this autumn

Well fear not, we’re here with some great tips to keep you going until the holidays.

Make savings with Tastecard

Let’s face it, the last thing you want to do after a long day of lectures is to cook yourself dinner.

If you’re anything like ninety per cent of students, you’ll be prone to eating out and ordering way too many takeaways. As tempting as getting that Chinese or pizza is, eating this way is unlikely to keep your bank balance looking all that healthy.

However, tastecard can help with that. Offering up to an amazing 50% off food or 2 or 1 discounts at 6000+ restaurants all across the UK, by signing up you can still treat yourself–without breaking the bank. Not only do they have your favourite chains such as YO! Sushi, Pizza Express, Frankie & Benny’s, Zizzi etc, also have thousands of local independents.

Do a group food shop

Now, this might sound obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many students don’t follow this advice.

Shopping individually might seem more convenient as you and your housemates have completely different schedules, but in reality, this can actually be really counter-productive.

Instead of doubling up on bottles of milk and loaves of bread, a group weekly shop means you can cover all the essentials together. Of course, you may have some specific dietary requirements or even just some favourite snacks, but there’s no reason why you can’t grab those bits yourself (on the cheap of course!).

Plan your trips

This tip may sound obvious, but this step is crucial if you want to avoid forking out to get from A to B.

As the holidays get nearer, in all likelihood you’re going to be travelling to see friends and family elsewhere in the country. By booking train and coach tickets in advance you can save yourself a lot of last-minute hassle dealing with higher fares.

Wrap up and stay warm

At the risk of sounding like a parent, there really is an easy way of avoiding those high winter heating bills - by putting a jumper on.

For those of you stressing about paying for gas and heating, the last thing you want on your plate is a massive bill as it’s sure to put you out of pocket. By grabbing a few extra layers you can keep yourself warm whilst keeping the expenses to a minimum, so be sure to have a little look online to get yourself adequately prepped.

Stay in and save

Although the so-called ‘student lifestyle’ might demand that you go out on the lash every night, for most students these days the reality is very different.

If you’re interested in saving your pennies, then taking a few more nights out of the week to stay home, watch films and take it easy is a great way to keep your costs down. It doesn’t have to be a solo activity either - why not get your friends and housemates involved and save together?
